A message from the Founder
“Hi, my name’s Abigail Sol and I lead our work at Uproot Productions.
So, who am I? I am somewhere between 2nd and 3rd generation St Lucian and Jamaican. I was raised by my mum in Croydon, South London, where I often felt disconnected from my Caribbean roots. My idea of ‘home’ has always been complex.
For an array of reasons, the land where I was born was not designed for someone like me to thrive. I didn’t fully understand the weight of this until I naively entered the working world in my early 20s. Long story short, office culture was not my calling. After years of shrinking and code-switching, whilst being undervalued and misunderstood, I quit my advertising job to pursue a career in the creative industry.
I draw upon my life experiences in all of my work, especially when dreaming of new realities at Uproot. Alongside my work with Uproot, I am a Director of theatre and film. I tell stories in the hopes of inspiring and empowering audiences, and my work typically centres coming-of-age stories about Black women and girls. I believe that making and consuming art should be accessible to all as creativity is such a powerful tool for change.
Community and creativity are at the core of my practice and I endeavour to cultivate spaces that centre care in all that I do. You can learn more about what we do at Uproot in our latest impact report Download it here.
